Golden Geotechnics, Inc. provides geospatial analytics, terrain analyses and route selection support for consultants, contractors, municipalities, state and federal agencies. Services can be tailored to meet your needs, ranging from project-specific mapping and analysis to assisting in the development of organization-wide spatial databases.
Our background in geology, geotechnical consulting, and geospatial research allows us to work directly with technical project data and develop spatial products that support engineering and scientific interpretation. Senior staff at GGI have decades of experience conducting GIS-based geologic and terrain analysis, including geomorphic mapping, drainage analysis, suitability modeling, and slope- and curvature-based characterization of geologic features.

GIS-based suitability modeling was used to evaluate parameters constraining the feasibility of tunnel construction over hundreds of kilometers, incorporating terrain metrics, overburden, geologic hazards, and land-use characteristics. The resulting model incorporates these parameters into a suitability heat map that can be used as an input for generating least-cost-path corridors. GGI used geostatistics and integrated language learning models to develop a regional cross section along tunnel alignment and generate first-order rock mass parameters from publicly-available data to inform construction feasibility schedule and cost analyses.

Supported pre-bid feasibility evaluation and means-and-methods selection for tunnel and pipeline excavation associated with the Glade Reservoir project. This includes interpolating limited data along a 1,550-foot LLOW tunnel to develop synthetic test borings on alignment. GGI also constructed GIS cross sections delineating the top of bedrock and rippability for excavation quantities along a new bypass pipeline alignment, incorporating geophysical and test borings, to support pre-bid planning and excavation assessment.

Historical aerial photography of San Diego County from 1953 was processed using photogrammetric methods to construct a digital elevation model and 3D representation of the former ground surface (as shown in the GIS & Geotechnical Services banner above). Comparison with modern elevation data allowed us to quantify landscape change and was used to determine the volume of excavation and fill associated with 1) landfills, 2) development-related grading, 3) filling of natural valleys for infrastructure, and 4) aggregate mining operations.

A relative elevation model (REM) was used to emphasize subtle topographic differences. By normalizing elevation relative to the local terrain or drainage framework, the analysis provides a clearer view of landforms and surface relationships that may be difficult to distinguish from conventional elevation or hillshade products alone.
