The staff of GGI are dedicated to the world community through hands-on volunteering, advancing geoscience education and skills-based pro bono work in the communities adversely affected by geologic hazards and disproportionate impacts from global climate change. GGI pledges 1% of staff billable time to advance this premise.
Resources provided by GGI Ownership facilitate the philanthropic goals of our staff. Funding from the 1% profit pledge goes to supporting community-based volunteering, skills-based pro bono geohazards mitigation, and advancing geoscience education at all grade levels. We are dedicated to leveraging the educational opportunities we have been fortunate to be provided and use that to benefit the communities that need that expertise. Our pledge of 1% profit will help to facilitate these goals.
GGI's Sean Sundermann was selected as lead engineering geologist for geohazard mapping, site characterization and development of general design guidelines for initial zone of reconstruction in Port-au-Prince, Haiti following the January 12, 2010 earthquake. Over multiple trips and years he assessed potential for liquefaction and lateral spreading near the coast and pseudo-static debris flow hazards from the Petionville hills. Completed site investigation in decimated urban area to develop design response spectra and design profiles for foundation recommendations. Identified common structural failures and mitigation strategies. Created foundation and structural recommendations pamphlet for use by UNDP employees in redevelopment.
